Former forward Tushar Khandekar has strong faith in the current Men’s Hockey team. He believes the national team has raised the bar in every aspect of the sport, and it will be a strong contender in the upcoming Olympics.

Olympics 2021 is scheduled to begin from July 23 in Tokyo, Japan.

He expressed his feelings on ‘Hockey te Charcha’, a podcast series initiated by Hockey India at the fore of the Olympics. “I feel the way the team (Indian Men’s Team) is doing right now; they are a strong contender to finish on the podium,” he was quoted as saying during the podcast.

He said team India has learnt a lot from all the events that have taken place so far. The year 2008 was not very successful as we couldn’t qualify for the match but we bagged 12th in London and endorsed 8th position in Rio. The London Olympics (2012) have taught us many things.

The players constituted in the present team know very well how even a minute mistake impacts the overall game. And recent tours to Australia and Europe have reflected the impressive transformation of the National team.

He took further and added, “…players part of the London Olympics like Sreejesh, Manpreet, Sunil, Danish Mujtaba, Raghunath (and others) who also got to play in Rio had told themselves the team won’t make the same mistakes they made in London. Likewise, I am sure players who were part of the Rio Olympics will caution the team of the errors they need to avoid making in Tokyo.”

“After the depression in 2008-09, it has taken us 10-11 years to climb to the level we are at today,” added the sportsman who made his international debut in 2003.

He delivered his service as an assistant coach to team India between 2014 to 2016.

The post Tokyo Olympics | Team India will be a strong contender, believes Tushar first appeared on The History Book of Indian Hockey.

The 2016 Hockey Champions Trophy in London just came to an end with Australia emerging as the champions in the Men’s category while the Argentina women’s team lifted the trophy for the 7th time. Soon after the end of this prestigious trophy the International Hockey Federation (FIH,) declared the current FIH Hero World Rankings.
India.
The Indian hockey team bettered their rank after winning the silver medal in the Hero Hockey Champions Trophy. India’s previous best performance in the Champions Trophy was the bronze medal in 1982. Prior to the coaching of Roelant Oltmans, India finished runners-up in the Azlan Shah Trophy in April. India is now looking forward to the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics Game to better their rankings.
Rankings – Men.
The 2016 Champions Trophy winner and the World Cup Champions – Australia leads the men’s ranking and have 2179 points. There is no change in the top three spots in men’s ranking with the Dutch in 2nd place with 1838 points and Germany in 3rd spot. England safely sits in 4th place while India jumped off to the 5th place ahead of Belgium and Argentina.
Rankings – Women.
The Netherlands women’s team top-ranked in the Women’s ranking while the current Champions Trophy winner – Argentina is in 2nd place, followed by Australia and the Kiwis. The bronze medal helped the USA to achieve 5th place. Indian women are in the13th place though they have qualified for the Rio 2016 Olympics Games.
Next updates in ranking.
The following rankings have been updated by FIH after the end of the Women’s Hockey Champions Trophy in London on Sunday. The next updated rankings will be published by FIH in August after the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The update to the FIH Hero World Rankings will have no impact on the pools for the Olympic Games, which were set based on the rankings as at 1st January 2016.
