It was a tough fight between two teams but at the end results comes as a loss to India. Indian Team Players claim that its due to wrong umpiring. Anyways loss is a loss.

Michael Nobbs (Indian Hockey Coach) does not have very high expectations from the team selected for “Sultan Azlan Shah Cup 2013” which is going to start in Malaysia from 9th of March.
But Coach is looking forward to use this tournament to develop a platform for new players. Coach said that tournament would serve as an ideal platform for identifying players for the Junior World Cup scheduled later this year.

“Nobbs said the main idea behind the decision to field an under-strength team was to prepare the youngsters for the FIH Junior World Cup to be held in India later this year.”

He Further Added:

“It is also a good opportunity to draft in some junior players as they are the future of Indian hockey. It will also create a healthy competition for places in the team. “Mandeep’s (Singh) performance in the Hockey World League is a prime example of the fact that junior players need development. Mandeep found international hockey lot tougher than Hockey India League. He has got talent but require development”.

This is important to note that Junior Coach Baljit Saini will also be the member of team visit to Malaysia.
On a question why not senior players not selected for this tournament, he said that we want to give rest to the senior players as we will have a tight schedule ahead.

BY their own admission, Tuesday’s showdown between Hockey India (HI) and Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials over who picks the tab for airfares for the Azlan Shah Cup-bound team was a case of one trying to show the other who’s the boss.
No one emerged a winner from this unnecessary war of words but the apathy and mistrust that continues to plague Indian sport came to the fore yet again. If the government fails to sanction a particular tour, shouldn’t it be the duty of the national body to take care of the team’s interests?

The incident came as a bad advertisement for both parties involved. Over the last few years, the government has done enough to ensure that athletes’ interests are safeguarded and money isn’t a deterrent anymore. Hockey, too, has never before been in better health, financially. The national team has three major sponsors at the moment, a rarity for the sport. The government too had earmarked a substantial amount for hockey.
Moreover, the money that Hockey India League injected into the sport and its subsequent success helped changing the manner in which hockey was perceived.
So, at a time when we were talking about providing players with world-class equipment and facilities, to fight over an issue as petty as airfares is bemusing. SAI claimed that HI had already overshot their budget considerably (according to a figure provided by them, HI had spent Rs 11.77 crore whereas they had been allocated Rs 5.5 crore) and had been ordered to spend carefully. HI’s contention was that the government was retaliating on ‘expected lines’ after it made a police complaint against a SAI employee.
The altercation has kicked up a cloud of mistrust and highlighted the ego-problems among the officials. For the overall betterment of Indian sport, all the stakeholders need to work in tandem and think on the same page and also refrain from brinkmanship and arbitrary threats of pulling out from important tournaments.

Bilateral hockey series: Pakistan, India set for decisive talks on revival

Recently, Pakistan confirmed that India will be coming over for a snooker series later this month and now the officials of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) and Hockey India (HI) are close to finalising the revival of a bilateral series planned for March-April.
The top two officials of the PHF including President Qasim Zia and Secretary Asif Bajwa reached Kuala Lumpur yesterday to attend the Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) meeting. They are also scheduled to meet HI Secretary General Narinder Batra to cement the plans for the bilateral series.
In December last year, the two counterparts signed an agreement from that would see them hold Pakistan-India bilateral Test series between 2013 to 2018. As per the agreement, Pakistan were to visit India in March 2013 and play five matches while India promised to pay a return visit in the following month.


But the series became doubtful due to political tensions between the two countries.  Problems were aggravated further when the Pakistan players had to return without playing the inaugural Hockey India League due to security threats.
However, both PHF and HI remained determined for the revival of the series and are now expected to finalise things soon after meeting on the sidelines of the AHF meeting today.
“We will meet the HI officials today,” the PHF President Qasim Zia told The Express Tribunefrom Kuala Lumpur yesterday. “The discussion to finalise the series and its schedule will be made during the meeting.”
Earlier, Bajwa, while leaving for Malaysia late Thursday night, said the revival of series was in the interest of both the countries and the PHF was looking forward to it.
PHF to press for amendments in series contract     
Meanwhile, it has been learnt that the top PHF officials may press their India counterparts to send their team first as they doubt the Indian government might hinder their return visit after Pakistan’s tour.
“This point is likely to be made during the meeting,” said a PHF official.
“We have confidence in HI but we have doubts about their government, who may create problems for India team’s return visit.”
The official said there was also a possibility that the two bodies could agree to financial compensations in millions for a team in case it withdraws from making the return trip.
“The PHF wants to make sure it won’t be one-way traffic and that will be the main discussion during the meeting.
“The schedule of the series will be announced once both bodies reach a consensus on the changes in the contract.”
